How Buyers and Sellers Can Help Prevent the Spread of Covid-19

The arrival of COVID-19 in Alberta means added precautions must be taken for all workers. As part of providing competent service, professional Realtors are expected to work cooperatively with clients to find a solution that helps minimize the risk for everyone involved.

We are all partners in preventing the spread of this virus. As of today’s writing (March 23rd) we urge buyers, sellers and fellow Realtors to take the following added precautions. These measures could change based on AHS updates from time of writing to publication date.

SELLERS:

• Thoroughly disinfect property prior to showings, especially commonly shared surfaces such as all door handles and light switch plates
• Thoroughly clean and disinfect the property after viewings
• Turn lights on for showings so that buyers can limit touching areas in the property.
• Leave only one feature sheet on counter per showing to avoid touching other sheets for future potential buyers.
• Provide an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and/or hand soap for buyer to use immediately upon entering property.

BUYERS:

• Thoroughly preview properties using online photos and video tours. Choose your Top 5-7 properties that include your highest priorities for neighborhood, size and style of home, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, parking, upgrades, additional features and price.
• Drive by properties to get a better ‘feel’ for the neighborhood, street, and exterior of the home before booking a showing. Narrow your list to a Top 5 to view.
• Upon entering property, wash hands with soap and water or disinfect with an alcohol-based sanitizer
• Limit your group to buyer’s agent and buyers only. Please leave children at home with a babysitter.
• Avoid putting down items like keys, phones, business card etc. on counter
• Leave lights on when viewing is finished and text Listing Agent upon completion

For buyers, sellers and agents, please cancel and reschedule showing if any person viewing property has travelled in the past 14 days, becomes symptomatic, or has been exposed to COVID-19. If you feel sick, use Alberta Health Services online assessment tool to determine your next steps.

As a Realtor I understand that some people are in a position where they have to buy or sell a property. Accordingly, each of us must continue to take every measure possible to prevent the spread.
